Damar gum is a sap from the shorea family tree. The sap / gum harvesting process is usually done once a month, sometimes up to 2 months to produce high quality gum. The level of gum production also depends on the weather season and the flowering process of the tree. Lampung is the only producer of the best quality damar gum in the world. According to several sources, damar tree planting in Lampung has been carried out since the early 1800s.
Damar trees are also very long lived, in some spots there are still trees that are hundreds of years old. Besides its sap, damar tree wood is also used for furniture such as frames, tables and doors. Currently the number of damar trees is decreasing due to the rampant logging.
